What is a CEO Job?

CEO’s are fundamentally responsible for the complete success or failure of a business, always drilling into the details and improving operations until things work perfectly from the top down. They are aware of existing and emerging external competitors, and possess both the acumen and insight to take advantage of any opportunities that can accelerate company growth. They also need to be aware of new risks, industry developments, regulations and standards that may need to be implemented, but always keeping at the forefront the needs of the customer.

The CEO will create and present a strategic plan that will give the company it’s direction, and may solicit advice and guidance from the board of directors, or advisors, if need be. Demonstrating strong leadership qualities and being able to garner respect is essential. By providing the company with a great company culture, clear vision, direction and purpose, the CEO will create a positive working environment which will in-turn, drive growth and ongoing success.

In the case of a new startup, the CEO’s responsibilities include everything from operations, recruitment, sales & marketing, public and stakeholder relations, investment, forming partnerships, company culture, strategic planning, team building, accounting, tax returns, HR, and the assignment and delegation of workloads within the company.

One of the most crucial roles of a CEO is to have a clear vision of where the company is going. This vision can often be five to ten years down the line. If the vision is set too low, and the CEO’s achievement is more on the mediocre side, the company’s growth will be limited as a result.

Performance milestones need to be put in place and regularly reviewed in order to run a highly successful company, and this can be achieved by recruiting a CEO that is forever learning and growing on both personal and professional levels.

How Much Does a CEO Job Pay?

CEO Remuneration varies by sector, location and experience. Whilst a CEO is usually in the highest salary band for a company, there are often added perks such as equity share, performance bonuses and relocation allowances.

Our latest Salary Review indicates that the current UK CEO base salary ranges from £36,000 – £158,000. Location has a heavy weighting on base salary ranges, with London and Manchester providing the highest base salaries (£205,000 and £173,000 respectively).
