The Role
Chief Investigator / Chief Executive Officer to lead the Healthcare Safety Investigation Branch (HSIB) – this post is a fixed term contract until June 2023 and eligible candidates are also able to be considered on a seconded basis as required.
The Healthcare Safety Investigation Branch (HSIB) conducts independent investigations into patient safety concerns in NHS funded care across England. The safety recommendations made aim to improve healthcare systems and processes in order to reduce risk and improve safety.

We are recruiting a Chief Investigator/Chief Executive Officer for the Healthcare Safety Investigation Branch (HSIB) who will provide senior leadership and direction to the day to day operations of the organisation, overseeing the Investigation Branch and its investigations ensuring these are independent in action, thought and judgement. They will work closely with patients, families and staff in a way that builds confidence and trust and ensures that all participants in an investigation are treated respectfully and sensitively and will also work closely with other national organisations and key stakeholders to ensure that the branch can effectively fulfil its role.
The Chief Investigator / Chief Executive Officer will work with the incoming Board to support the establishment of the new Health Service Safety Investigations Body (HSSIB), subject to Royal Assent of the Health and Care Bill. They will also work in conjunction with the Department for Health and Social Care (DHSC), NHS England and Improvement and the new Chair of Healthcare Safety Investigation Branch on the development of the organisations vision and strategy, building a culture of respect that values diversity, maintains staff and stakeholder engagement, ensures robust governance and assurance arrangements are in place, builds effective systems for financial control, risk management and an effective investigatory methodology/ criteria for investigations.
Candidates will need to be a proven senior leader; the ability to operate in a highly complex environment with multiple stakeholders is essential, along with a track record of building a respectful and psychologically safe culture, high performing, engaged, inclusive teams and of developing diverse talent.
