Hospice UK is the national charity for hospice and end of life care. We work to ensure everyone affected by death, dying and bereavement gets the care and support they need, when they need it.

We believe that everyone, no matter who they are, where they are or why they are ill, should receive the best possible care at the end of their life. No one should die in avoidable pain or suffering.

Our mission is to transform the way society cares for the dying and those around them. We aim to empower individuals, communities and populations to embrace the ethos of hospice care, extending its breadth and reach to improve everyone’s experience of death, dying and bereavement.

Over the last two years, the UK hospice movement has experienced unprecedented times and has been on the frontline of care during the COVID pandemic. Hospice UK worked in collaboration with the government and the NHS to secure finances and resource support for the sector during the pandemic to enable hospices to have the capacity and capabilities to take on this challenge.

Looking forward, the new CEO will have a unique opportunity to lead Hospice UK. You will have the ambition and drive needed to bring about wide-reaching social and cultural transformation in end of life care, as well as extending the reach to ensure all parts of the community have access to the care and support they need for end of life care.

You will work with all partners, both within and beyond hospice and end of life care, to seek to address existing inequalities, and ensure we achieve our vision ‘that everyone, no matter who they are, where they are or why they are ill, should receive the best possible care at the end of their life.’

The Candidate

• Evidence of demonstrable track record, as either a Chief Executive or senior Director, delivering outstanding performance
• Significant previous experience and evidence of successful and impactful partnership and collaborative working
• A track record of leading transformational change
• Demonstrable belief and commitment to equality, diversity and inclusion
• Evidence of success as an organisational ambassador, with the ability to be a high profile and visible national spokesperson
• The ability to deal with a range of complex issues, as well as being a highly skilled negotiator and influencer
• Sound knowledge and awareness of the different health and social care systems and policy landscape across the four nations of the UK
• Political acumen and proven ability to lobby, with experience of dealing with and influencing statutory bodies, and other stakeholders at senior levels
• Financial and business acumen, with a proven ability to drive income generation
• A coaching style of leadership and a track record of building and maintaining successful teams
